Mellow Yellow

"There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transfer a yellow spot into the sun". Pablo Picasso

I had not had the courage to try yellow polish. It is everywhere this spring, I just didn't think it would work for me. I gave in to the temptation, and my yellow nails have gotten so many compliments! From a high school boy waiting tables to a grandmother at a park. I have been pondering why I don't hear comments on some of my favorite colors, yet yellow is drawing such attention. The answer I would assume is the same reason I took the leap and painted my nails in the first place. Yellow makes people happy! I say try it and see how many people you make smile...

The Lob

I have had a fascination with the Lob this year.  (Long Bob)  I can't explain why I love it, or why I think it is such a flattering look.  It does draw attention to the neck and it is also a versatile style, but I just like it!

Butter

Butter
I fell in love with Butter London nail polish a handful of years ago.  They always release colors that are on trend, and I love that they call it lacquer and not polish.  How British! They were the first company to sell non-toxic nail "lacquer" in the States.  Butter just came out with a lip gloss called Lippy.  They come in colors that match the nail lacquers, I can't wait to try them out...

Transition

One of my friends at work has gone through hair transition.  She is a natural medium blonde.  When I started working with her she had just modeled for a hair show.  They had colored her hair black, it looked great but she was ready to go back blonde recently.  Another stylist did what she could but her color resulted in a reddish color.
Before
She then asked me to do her hair to reach her goal color.  I did some color correction, added highlights and this is the result...
After

And yes, she should really be smiling in the after picture!

Mad for Mad Men

I can't wait to see the season premiere of Mad Men Sunday.  As time is evolving on the show, I look forward to seeing the hair, makeup, clothes, and accessories of the period.   I recently read an interview with the set's hairdresser Gloria Ponce.  She is constantly researching how hair was worn by men and women not just at the time but also by location.  New York was not as up to date with styles as California was for instance.  I will be paying closer attention this season to all of the details...

Birthday Girl

Happy birthday to my sweet Aunt... I love cutting her hair-she started wearing the cutest pixie cut long before Emma Watson and Michelle Williams did...It's a classic cut and when done well, looks amazing!

What a Brush

I've been so excited about this brush since I first read about it.  There is microfiber in between the bristles, which cuts down on drying time.  I am hoping they start making them for hairdressers in round brushes-I would love it, as would clients!

The Chanel Tweed Jacket

I love seeing how things are made.  I just discovered this video on the process of making a classic Chanel tweed jacket.  I love that in 2012 so much detail, hand work, and time still goes into each jacket...

Eames The Architect And The Painter

I've been on a documentary kick lately. I'll watch a documentary on anything... I recently watched Eames The Architect and the Painter. It is for anyone who loves a bit of history, furniture, design, or living outside the box. I learned so much not only about Eames designs, but the history of modernism. I'll never look at an Eames chair the same way again!

Happy St. Paddy's Day

If I were going out to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I would paint my nails metallic gold for the pot of gold...

And I'd run to the art supply store and get soft pastel chalk in green. I'd smudge some on the ends of my hair or highlight a braid. It would be the last time you would see green in my hair, but I love a theme!

Julian Fellowes Titanic

I read an article this morning about a 4 part miniseries which will air in April called Titanic.  It was written by Julian Fellowes who also wrote Downton Abbey.  Since this is my THIRD mention in a post of that series, I'm clearly a fan.

I am so happy to have all of these opportunities to see amazing hair!  The series is sure to offer examples of incredible hair, hats, hair accessories, and clothes.  This time period is the trend in hair today.  I have so much inspiration at my fingertips!

Here Comes the Bride...

On 11/11/11 I had the privilege of doing the hair for a beautiful bride and her bridesmaids.  Our relationship started in Miami.  I'm not sure if she became my friend first or a client, but she's both.  My lovely friend and bride got married in Islamorada.  It was dreamy...  She has a beautiful family, she has a beautiful husband and I think every beach wedding should have beautiful white leather furniture on which to sit seaside.  Ahhh....

Headbands

The ancient Greeks wore wreaths often adorned with jewels and gold, which would be the modern day headband.  In the early 1900's women wore wide ornate headbands which were called headache bands, as they believed they would relieve headaches due to the tension put on the temples.

I love headbands but I'm getting tired of seeing similar styles on everyone.  Here are a few I have not seen before.

Halston

I finally watched the film Ultrasuede:In Search of Halston.  I enjoyed hearing what others thought of Halston as a designer and I found his business empire he built to be fascinating.  His designs are almost always recognizable.  Simple, draped, sexy...

Halston started as a milliner, he designed the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.  His designs are historic...
