ART BASEL MIAMI 2011

Pepperstein, Pavel: Do You Love My Hair?

Art Basel Miami starts tomorrow and runs until the 4th.  I have been whining silently to myself, wishing I was going, wishing I was there...

I crave art.  I love art.  I love the energy it attracts, I love the conversations surrounding art.  Art Basel Miami fulfills all of these things and more!  I am reminded of my favorite Miami restaurants, the smell of salty sea air, and sweet friends...

Here are some fun pieces I would have loved seeing!

Top Bun

Instyle.co.uk
My favorite look right now is the top bun.  Think ballerina bun on the top of the head.
It's so easy, and it looks great on everyone.  Your hair should fit into a ponytail pulled to the top of your head for this to work.

Start with hair curled either with an iron or hot rollers.  This will add texture and make the hair easier to work with.  Hairspray with a medium hold hairspray.  Next pull the hair on top of your head, no lower than the crown, into a ponytail.  Do not twist the hair as you would with a ballerina bun, but keep it flat.  Wrap it loosely around the ponytail band, and pin it in place.  It does not have to be perfect, I think it looks better if it's not.  Goody spin pins work best if you are doing this yourself.

The Bobby Pin

Bobby pins were invented in the 1920's to help keep the "bob" in place and close to the head.  They were sold in colors to match one's hair color so they could be hidden.

Bella Sugar
I keep seeing this hairstyle lately which is offending me.  We are entering party season, and I am hoping that women across the country don't start thinking this is O.K.  I have spent years perfecting the art of hiding a bobby pin.

This is being passed as fashion, but it's just lazy.  If you are going to have your bobby's show, PLEASE choose a decorative pin as to not be so obvious!

Black Friday

My Black Friday does not consist of shopping for sales...  I am drinking my detox tea, I have my large bottle of water, and I'm about to do my workout.

Holly Scoop
I have been obsessed with the Tracy Anderson Method for a long time.  The first time Gwyneth Paltrow sang her praises I just had to find out about this workout.  It's obviously working for her!  I organized a "workout weekend" a few years back with a group of my girlfriends.  We did 3 workouts a day, one of them consisting of my Tracy Anderson DVDs.  The DVDs were a mess back then-hard to do and left us all just laughing hysterically.  She has since drastically improved them, I started the new DVDs last spring.  I swear by them.  My body doesn't feel sore anymore after doing hair all day.  I look forward to doing the workout daily and I've never felt more fit!

I searched for similar workouts I could do outside the home.  I found the Bar Method which is a few doors down from the salon where I work.  I try to get to a class once a week.  It's a different approach, but I love how my legs shake during the workout.  I can feel my metabolism working the entire day, and I love being challenged.

Whether it's Tracy Anderson, Physique 57, Pure Barre, Bar Method, pilates or other similar approaches, they are all low impact workouts that change the shape of your body.  If there is not a studio near you, DVDs are a great option!!!

Enjoy a workout today-I promise you'll feel better...

THANKSgiving

Spirit Reins

We are reminded over and over to be thankful especially this time of year.  I am thankful for the people who have been coming into my life. Two incredible clients who were referred to me by my brother sat in my chair and within minutes we had connected.  For that I am thankful...

Some who have known me for many years know that I have supported and volunteered for a school for autism.  The parents and the children inspired me.  Fast forward. My new clients explained that they were becoming involved with an organization called Spirit Reins.   They use Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to work with emotionally and behaviorally challenged kids.  This includes at risk kids, kids suffering loss and trauma and children with autism.  The organization's vision is for all children to experience hope, healing, and unconditional acceptance.  I was moved and for that I am thankful...

Nancy Hill and her daughter Shelley Hill will be opening their location of Spirit Reins mid-December.  They will be part of the "Give As You Get" website soon which is an amazing concept if you do online shopping...

I am thankful for the work they are doing, I am thankful to have met these amazing people and I am thankful that people continue to find bigger and better ways to heal...

Happy Thanksgiving!
And Spirit Reins...

Oribe

oribe.com

Yes, the "great" hair stylists, or should I say "celebrity" stylists all go by one name and I love it!  Oribe started out as an assistant to Garren in New York.

I remember distinctly in the late '90's Oribe was creating a lot of buzz.  He had just come out with a color pomade, which a dear friend gave me as a kitschy gift...  He was the hair stylist for the who's who of Hollywood and he was also known to be wild, tattooed, and a rebel.  As stylists we were trying to clean up our notorious reputation so he made quite the impression!  He fell from grace for a period of time for various reasons but is now back with a vengeance!!!

oribe.com
Oribe lives in Miami now.  He has cleaned up nicely and is still the hair stylist for the who's who of Hollywood.  Every stylist has a "look"  and his is big, glamorous hair.

I am fortunate in that I work at Propaganda Salon which carries Oribe products.  I have a few favorites, they smell heavenly and I would have to say I've never worked with a product line in which every product in the line gives an amazing amount of shine!  Here are my favorites and I've decided they are my new "perfume"...  Every product in the line is the same scent, imagine the Amalfi Coast!

  • The first is Apres Beach-for those beachy waves or just a little texture
  • The second is Royal Blowout-your hair will dry faster, with a shiny fullness
  • The third is a gold pomade-yes gold!  You can smooth it through the hair for a subtle gold reflection!

Inspiration Photo
Well, as many things go, I didn't get my way...  Ultimately, what is most important is that the client gets their way and what they love!  In the end, that is actually what makes me happy too.

Before
I completed the makeover I mentioned in a previous post.  My sweet neighbor decided the blonde would be too blonde, and the short would be too short.  So, I did a balayage which she loved for it's subtlety and I maintained some length.  Just another reminder that it's not all about me-I need to be reminded!

Audrey Hepburn

Breakfast at Tiffany's IMDB
Everyone loves Audrey Hepburn.  The best hairdressing I have EVER seen in a movie is in  Breakfast at Tiffany's.  I watched it 10 times before I even knew the story line, I was so focused on her hair!!!

One of my favorite quotes happens to be by Audrey Hepburn.  It is my mantra...

"For attractive lips, speak only words of kindness-
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people-
For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day-
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone". Audrey Hepburn

ART

Versailles Jeff Koons exhibit  courtesy of The Guardian UK
This is dedicated to someone from my past who taught me everything I know about art.  She made art approachable.  I have enormous respect for people who have a passion for whatever it is they love. Her passion is contagious!

I stumbled upon these balloon dog ornaments recently, they'd make the best gift...  Everyday objects inspired by art make me happy!

MAKEOVER

This is one of my sweet neighbors who is indulging me in making her over!  This is her "before" picture...

Propaganda Salon encourages us to explore our work on hair models. I love this because I've been doing hair for a long time, but I refuse to stop learning and I never want my work to become stagnant.

Here is my inspiration photo for this makeover. I will give her this edgy, blunt cut as well as a bright highlight.  I love a beautiful, soft balayage but this calls for a strong all-over lift!  I will include the "after" photo on Monday when the makeover is complete!

Vidal Sassoon

Vidal Sassoon is 83 years old, and I owe my career largely to him.  Women everywhere owe their quality of life to him!  He literally invented "wash and wear" hair.

Here is a trailer of the documentary of his life.  It is now one of my favorite films, every time I watch it I cry... You don't have to be a hairdresser to appreciate someone who came from nothing, worked hard, became obsessed with what he loved and refused to hear the word "NO".
Remember, 'If you don't look good, we don't look good'...  VIDAL SASSOON
