Finger Waves
Finger waves are such a beautiful and timeless look. They were first seen in the 1920's to make the current bob that everyone was wearing appear softer. January Jones wore finger waves to the Vanity Fair Oscar party, she looked absolutely stunning... Finger waves can be difficult for even the most accomplished hairdresser to master. So behind every finger wave is a brilliant hairdresser!

Beauty school
I am taking some advanced classes for the next few days so my posts may be education focused. I am in class with a freelance stylist who just finished working on the movie Lincoln. She worked mostly with wigs which made me quite envious! We spoke at length about period hair which I am and will always be captivated with...
I can't wait to recap the hair worn to the Oscars. I am sure to see lots of period hair since dressed hair has been going in that direction. Lots of chignons, natural waves, crystal accents and a return of the side part... The anticipation is killing me!

Happy Birthday
My mom has such a deep affection for music. This song was the #1 hit the day she was born. Happy Birthday Mom!

1920? 2012?
My brother is an equine vet. He irons his shirts every day, buttons up, dons a hat and starts his day... When men wore hats every day, hair was kept incredibly short. This made hat wearing more comfortable and kept hair presentable when the hat came off. I posted some men's haircuts previously, one included an image from Boardwalk Empire which takes place during the 1920's. This has been the inspiration for my brother's haircut. It has worked well for his lifestyle, and is a perfect example of making a period haircut work for modern times!

Downton Abbey Bandwagon
If you still don't believe me and haven't jumped on the Downton Abbey bandwagon, you must! The architecture, decor, clothes, shoes, riding clothes and HAIR! Every episode keeps me at full attention. Yes, the drama keeps me coming back for more but it is such a treat for the eyes!
Ralph Lauren created quite a buzz at New York Fashion Week when his show started with the Downton Abbey theme music and the feel of the show was fashionably British...

Virtual Barber
This is hysterical. I giggled my way through this, and I now know what it feels like to be a client sitting in the chair! You MUST listen to this with headphones on and eyes closed. Otherwise, it's just not worth it...

GRACE
My best friend in Miami is from Ecuador. She's a gorgeous girl, but she's even prettier on the inside. Such a cliche but true... She is the most amazing girl, her name is Grace. Not a typical South American name. Her grandmother named her mother after Grace Kelly, and in turn she was named after her mother. Even worlds away people saw the poise and grace in America's "Grace". My friend has the best sense of humor, everyone loves her and she loves everyone like there is no tomorrow. She made me fall in love with Miami and made me fall in love with the Latin World.
Grace is Oprah's biggest fan. While I have had the best memories of watching Oprah with my grandma, and sitting in a hotel room on a girl's trip with my sweet friends watching countless episodes... I've poked fun and at times thought the country was on Oprah overload. I was surprised and thought it hysterical when Grace told me she thought Oprah was amazing, and that she's never missed an episode. Then came her story. Grace came to America at 19. She spoke little English. She told me that she would watch Oprah every day and that she taught her English, along with what America is and most likely who American women are. Since that story I've had a new respect for Oprah. Not the Oprah Americans know, but the Oprah through my beautiful Ecuadorian friend's eyes. It's a sight to be seen...

To tan or not to tan...
Coco Chanel is said to have made a bronze glow chic. Previously a tan was only seen on laborers, the upper class stayed out of the sun to stay pale. This showed their status of not having to work outside and the privilege of staying indoors. Coco Chanel changed the perception after a yacht excursion one year and suddenly a tan told people you could afford to vacation out of season...
Several modeling agencies (the top 11) in the UK have decided to ban the use of tanning beds by their models. They have done this in support of cancer research which is admirable. Not surprising, they also want their models to stay looking young and wrinkle free.
The U.S. has not followed suit. So will it be chic again to be pale? Only time will tell!

Oscar
Oscar de la Renta showcased the best hair of New York Fashion Week in my opinion. So soft, romantic, but also with an edge. If you can't see in detail, there is a ribbon headband which is pulling the hair up in the back to create somewhat of a faux bob. The ribbon is left dangling in the back. The clothes were also very romantic and had lots of bead detail. Perfect example of pulling a look together!

The Morning After...
I eagerly watch awards shows for the clothes, makeup and of course hair to inspire me. On the Grammys last night, everyone looked beautiful, but in an "I've seen that before" sort of way.
The mood of the night was in memory of Whitney Houston. Her voice was obviously bigger than life but personally her influence on me was in fashion and hair. I was a teenager in the '80's, and I emulated her hair down to the over-sized bow! I had to keep my hair in a perm of course, which was well worth it to feel so fabulous!

SNL
In a previous post, I raved about the group Karmin. They are the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this evening. It is an honor and a right of passage to be a musical guest on Saturday Night Live... You have made it, or are about to make it, or you have been given a chance to make it! I can't wait to see them perform. They are happy, fun and talented which is all anyone should ever ask for...

Fashion Week
It is New York Fashion Week... I couldn't be happier, seeing what will be trending in fashion, hair and makeup.
Sarah Jessica Parker can do no wrong in my eyes. I mean, swoon! White gloves, black leather jacket with a floor length gown! Not to mention she always has the perfectly colored, perfectly coiffed hair.

Shailene Woodley
Just try and tell me this is not the cutest girl... Shailene Woodley played George Clooney's daughter in the Descendants. Finally saw the movie tonight after so many rave reviews in the coolest theater, made even more enjoyable because I saw it with the sweetest woman who has become one of my most treasured friends...
Shailene received a Golden Globe nomination, but did not receive one for an Oscar. It's shocking because she gave an unbelievable performance and was so true and raw. She's my new favorite up and coming star. She had the perfect beachy waves and subtle highlights in the movie. Oh i love her hair!!!

Hair Empire
It seems I was the only one not watching Boardwalk Empire. I had seen images of the hair-even featured a man's haircut in one of my posts which my brother now sports. I decided to join the rest of the country and watch... I am now caught up on the first season, now I am hooked and am ready to enjoy season 2.
I struggle to follow the episodes at times because I'm so distracted by the beautiful hair and hats. I'm taking it all in!

W.E.
I can't help it, I'm a huge fan of the '80's Madonna. I copied her hair, her jewelry, her shoes, her clothes. I haven't followed her much since the '80's, but...
Today's Madonna is still in the industry of entertainment. She's performing at the Super Bowl, and she is releasing the movie W.E. (Wallis Edward)
I have seen a documentary, and I've read one of several books written on the subject of Edward, Duke of Windsor and Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. Such a dramatic, controversial story...
I will definitely go to this movie. I can't wait to see the fabulous clothes and hair. Today's dressed styles are borrowing many looks of that day... I can't wait to be inspired!

Downton Abbey
After many awards and so much press I've decided to commit to watching Downton Abbey. Season 1 has come and gone and Season 2 has begun. I have yet to see an episode but I think I must be missing out!
Lots of beautiful hair. All up of course because in the Victorian age hair down would have been too risque...
I can't wait to lose myself in yet another television show!
